I’m a big fan of technology. I can appreciate leaps in technology that make me say “wow!” From controlling things in your home from your cellphone, to electric cars, to stovetops that can boil water but are cool to the touch, I love technology! So when a company like Daiwa puts cutting edge technology (NASA stuff) into an offshore spinning reel, I’m instantly intrigued.
Instead of using rubber gaskets (o-rings) to seal the Daiwa Saltiga Dogfight SATG70000HDF Spinning Reel, like you would find in a Van Staal or a Zeebaas Spinning Reel, Daiwa uses magnetic oil (think Venom costume consistency) that changes shape when controlled by a magnetic field. We shot a video of the oil being controlled by a magnet. You can view that here. Because it is a liquid, this not only forms a tight seal, but also eliminates a lot of friction making for a very smooth reel. And by smooth reel, I mean the smoothest reel.
I can honestly say that the Daiwa Saltiga Dogfight 7000 is the smoothest spinning reel I have ever felt. It is significantly smoother than a comparable Shimano Stella and anything else on the market. The 16 ball bearings, coupled with the magnetic seal make this reel an absolute dream.
Daiwa put their Ultimate Tournament Carbon drag system into this reel and it gets an awesome 66 lbs of drag at max! Chances are you’ll rip your arms off before this reel quits on you!
This really is an amazing feat of engineering and takes the technology in fishing equipment to the next level. With a $1399.95 price tag, a very limited number of anglers will get to fish with one, but I encourage you to come into the shop and take a look at this reel. Even if you have no plans to fish offshore with a spinning reel, you should at least hold this reel in your hands and see what it is capable of. See what kind of impact a little technology and out of the box thinking can get you. Pure awesomeness!
