Everyone loves Penn gold! Even people who don’t like gold reels are somehow attracted to Penn gold. I don’t know what it is but year after year Penn keeps building gold reels and customers keep buying them. This gold reel, the Penn Torque TRQ25NLD2 Lever Drag 2 Speed Reel is very nice.
Penn created the Torque Lever Drag 2-Speed Reels to compete with all the other major manufacturers who have been building small, powerful 2-speed reels that hold a lot of braid. We’re talking about Shimano Talicas, Avet Raptors, Daiwa Saltigas, and Accurate Dawgs. All of these reels are very similar but each company has their strengths.
One of the things that was critical to Penn when designing a Lever Drag 2-Speed Reel series was that it was light in weight. They had made the mistake of releasing a very heavy reel with the introduction of the original Penn Torque reels and knew they couldn’t do it again. The TRQ25NLD2 is comparable in size to a Talica 12II, yet is 4 1/2 ounces lighter. This is a big difference, especially for a company with a track record of not seeing that the reels of the future would be able to handle braid but also be light in weight.
The two-speed mechanism on the TRQ25NLD2 performs very similarly to the ones found on their International Reels. The lever drag system looks like a miniaturized version of the ones on their Internationals. Both are very good and perform as advertised. This reel puts out an impressive 33 lbs of drag at max and has a comfortable rubberized power handle. It holds close to 400 yards of 65 lb braid and weighs just 21.1 ozs so it will handle a very wide variety of fish. Anything from inshore fishing to offshore fishing with this reel. Perfect for jigging and bottom fishing.
The reel looks and performs like a Penn. That might sound really weird but all reels from a single manufacturer feel similar throughout their lines. You could pick up a $100 Penn and a $600 Penn and they’d both have the same essence. Yes they would feel very different but there is something very similar about all Penn Reels.
The reel retails for $579.95. Price wise it is less than a comparable Accurate but more than the Shimano and Avet. It is made in the USA so you have to decided how much that is worth to you. Overall this is an excellent fishing and I am very impressed with the work Penn put into it. Get yourself a Penn Torque TRQ25NLD2 Lever Drag 2 Speed Reel.
