I was surprised when I saw that I hadn’t done a video review of the Avet MXJ 5.8 Lever Drag Reels. We sell so many SXs and MXLs that the MXJ kind of got lost in the shuffle. I consider it more of a West Coast reel because anglers out there like to use it for jigging. It’s got a narrower spool than the MXL. On the East Coast the guys prefer the SX when fishing for the smaller stuff like fluke and porgies, and the MXL for striped bass, blackfish, etc. The Avet MXJ isn’t as popular.
Just because it’s not the first choice fort he guys coming into our store, doesn’t mean that it’s not a solid eel. The MXJ is a lightweight, aluminum reel that has a ton of power and a powerful drag system. It weighs just 17 ozs and puts out 14 lbs of drag at max. The reel will hold a ton of 40 or 50 lb braid and pulls in line at 38″ per crank. Eight ball bearings and a nice lever drag system make this reel a favorite for many anglers. The oversized power handle is extremely comfortable.
The Avet MXJ 5.8 Lever Drag Reel sells for $169.99 (at least it does for the next half hour. In 2014 Avet raises the price to $209.99). It is available in 11 different colors and you can buy yours at jandh.com.
