Have owned the 5ii for a year or so now and have pulled on everything from bottom dwellers to Barracuda to Bluefin using surface irons and live bait. The reel has been my go-to ever since. It casts fairly well if you can control your thumb pressure and has enough drag to handle things you may not expect. Have it loaded with 65 lb braid and top it off with 8-12 ft of 40 lb fluoro. This thing handled a 75 lb Bluefin earlier this year bringing it to gaff in about a half hour, maybe a bit more using an 8 ft Okuma Makaira rod. The drag was smooth and didn't skip a bat during the first couple runs of back and forth then I was able to click up on the drag to bring her in. I would have given this a 4.5 but it won't let you so I have to default to 4. First, I wished the low gear was a bit lower as it would have made reeling in that tuna easier, though, to be honest, it wasn't really intended for something that large. During the fight, I switched from high to low and back several times as the fish made runs towards and away from the boat. Afterwards the reel wouldn't click out of low-speed. It took a good bit of finagling but it came out though was still a pain to actuate. Had to shelve it for the rest of the trip. Back home I oiled the mechanism and now it is good but not as good as new. Will send it in for service. Al in all, though, this thing was a great buy compared to some of the other offerings.
Use the the new Metaloid just once in 2014 for some So Cal offshore fishing. Had the reel filled with 50# braid with short floor leader for some live bait action. The reel handled the smaller game fish i encountered and did well on some bottom fishing later in the day. i chose this reel over the Avet SX (i own 2 Avet BTW) as it presented the best value for the amount if drag it produces plus Okuma has great customer service its not too far me. i would highly recommend this reel.
Took the 5NII and the 5II offshore for some Gulf of Mexico bottom fishing and these little reels did everything I wanted them to do. Easily handled Mangrove snapper up to 9lbs, red snapper up to 20, red grouper, amberjacks, unfortunately no gag grouper. I never felt like I was overpowered by the fish.
