As we move down the line, the Penn Squall SQL50LD Lever Drag Reel grows beefier than its younger brothers – able to handle larger species in deeper water. You can use your SQL50LD to target large grouper, amberjacks, yellowtail, cod, pollock, tilefish and other midsized nearshore and bottomfish. Penn’s DuraDrag lever drag system puts out a sturdy 20# drag, and uses a ratcheted lever to prevent drag creep if you’re using your SQL50LD as a trolling reel. You can fish either braid or mono, as the capacity for either is large – you’re talking 420 yards of 40# mono or an obscene 750 yards of 80# braid. As with the other reels in this series, I’d recommend using mono on your SQL50LD or at least a braid backing with a large monofilament topshot. It’s not that the reel can’t handle braid; in fact the spool comes with capacity rings for braided line. It’s because of the graphite construction; the Penn Squall SQL50LD Lever Drag Reel is larger than other reels in its class and can handle a large amount of mono.
