Anglers have been asking for the Seigler SGN Lever Drag Reels for a long time! The original SG is a compact, powerful workhorse but with the universal adoption of braided fishing lines, reels are getting smaller and smaller while maintaining the same amount of power. The SGN is a great example of this. It features a narrow frame and weighs in at just 11 ozs yet puts out 30 lbs of drag at max. The aluminum frame is strong so you don't have to worry about flex. It features six ball bearings, a 6:1 gear ratio and holds 350 yards of 30 lb braid. Seigler SGN Lever Drag Reels are perfect for inshore and nearshore fishing. It can easily handle big striped bass, bluefish, blackfish and even small tuna!
If you haven't heard of Seigler Reels before, it might be because you know them as Truth Reels or Release Reels. Wes and his team build great fishing reels that are 100% made in the USA! Great reel, used this reel in Lofoten, Norway. This little reel helped me to land a 21kg Cod and a 68kg Halibut! Used it for approx 14-16 hours a day for a week and it never failed! Will order a LGN as I are going for real deep-sea fishing this fall and need more line capacity. From now on, Seigler reels will be my only choice when it comes to North Atlantic fishing!
This little reel is no joke. I wanted something small and mighty to put on a tsunami MH slow pitch jigging rod that wouldnt be too bulky and would allow for fun fights with tautog this fall.. after much deliberation I chose the SGN spooled up with #30 PP and I couldn't be happier. First off, there was some debate as to whether or not the SGN would even fit the small reel seat of the tsunami TSSPJC-661MH, it does. The reel feet catch and hold just fine on the reel seat. The reel clamp that the seigler comes with was loose on such a tiny rod, but that was no big deal, I just cut a small piece of pool noodle foam I had laying around, placed it between the rod and the clamp and it fit snugly. The combo handled like a dream, SUPER LIGHT and awesome power. This reels first day on the water landed well over a hundred fish with absolutely no issues.. tautog to 7lbs, Seabass double headers to 25inches, and stripers to 40lbs. Yes, you read that correctly, a rod thinner than a pencil and a reel that looks like a porgy reel landed several big bass up to 40lbs WITHOUT A GLITCH (While the peanut gallery chuckled, watched and waited for the rod to snap or the reel to fail). Amazing power and drag in such a small reel (the rod is no joke either). That evening she got a quick rinse down and was back at it again the next day. Again the reel performed flawlessly, And again it got the chance to fight in several more BIG bass plus more tautog and seabass.. with multiple onlookers predicting it's failure as drag screamed out over and over again, this little reel was amazing. The drag was smooth and reliable and made the reel feel and handle like a much larger reel. I had never fished a seigler before and have heard mixed reviews, but the American made reel with a LIFETIME warranty was what caught my eye. So here's the skinny on this little bada$#... picture it as a rugged 4X4 that gets you where you need to be. it's not a maserati, and I'm not going to baby it like a maserati. I'm gonna beat it up, spray it off, and it's gonna keep performing like it should. im confident in beating this american made reel up on tough fishing days and when all is said and done, shes super easy to self service. Some people seem to think it gets a little stiff with higher drag, that's true to some degree, but it's not a deal breaker at all. It's built like a tank, don't ask it to handle like a Porsche. My suggestion would be to handle one prior to purchase if your unsure. Stop in at J&H and talk to Josh or one of the guys in the shop. Hold the reel, get a feel for her. You should fall in love just as quickly as I did. All in all I love the reel and the combo is so light you can fish it literally all day without even thinking about fatigue. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a well made American product with a fantastic warranty. Go pick one up at J&H, you'll thank me later.
