The Shimano Talica TAC8II 2-Speed Lever Drag Reel is an incredibly popular, professional grade small lever drag that’s a best seller here at J&H. The TAC8II is very compact, but thanks to its Japanese made one piece aluminum frame, the TAC8II can easily withstand hard charges from large nearshore species – think tarpon, stripers, AJs, redfish, cobia, yellowtail, and jack crevalle. If you choose to toss some jigs or even pitch live baits with your TAC8II, you’re in luck considering the lightweight spool with greaseless support bearings create a fluid and extremely accurate cast, with minimal chance for backlash. This is a 2 speed reel, with a quick (6.2:1) high gear perfect for ripping jigs up through the water column. The low (4.1:1) gear is ideal for cranking down on stubborn predators once hooked up – it’s also great for getting a couple of quick turns onto a grouper trying to get back to his hole. The TAC8II uses a heavy duty lever drag system that puts out a hefty 20# drag, which for the size of the reel is pretty extraordinary. You’re looking at a capacity of around 400 yards of 50# braid, which is perfect for midsize targets as well as some shallow(er) reef and wreck fishing. The Shimano Talica TAC8II 2-Speed Lever Drag Reel uses Shimano’s own High Efficiency Gearing which replaces the older main gear with a large powerful gear that has smaller teeth for improved gear meshing and, with the addition of 8 S-ARB ball bearings, gives the TAC8II a ridiculously smooth retrieve.
