  • Crazy light, nice workmanship

    By John Martinsen on 5/24/2020

I'm a relative newbie to the sport, so take that into consideration, fishing for stripers in the Boston area. It's mostly smaller schoolies in the spots I fish, so I've been looking for a new rod to run smaller lighter gear. I've also been looking for a light weight rod with a shorter butt. Low and behold this Dark Matter OB rod shows up on the interwebs, it's almost like they read my mind (a short read) and created the perfect amalgamation of surf rod and inshore rod. For now I've paired it with a Daiwa Fuego 4000 reel in trying to keep it light, altogether weighs just a little over a pound spooled with 30lb braid. Have yet to catch anything on it, but casts very nicely.

  • Great all purpose rod

    By Michael _ on 1/4/2021

Awesome rod for the money! Lure weight rating holds up as advertised on the low end (1/2 oz.), I have not thrown heavier on it yet but threw about 200 casts with 1/2 oz. yesterday and the rod loaded fine. Looking forward to testing out the upper lure weight rating soon. The short butt section was a perfect length for working lures but still had just enough room to efficiently load the rod for distance. I had a 5000 size reel with 20# braid mounted up and it balanced out fine on the rod. This rod fills in a gap between dedicated inshore rods and light surf rods which makes it very useful as an all purpose set up for grabbing one rod and covering lots of water. PLEASE MAKE A CASTING VERSION OF THIS ROD with a trigger!

  • Awesome, *Awesome* rod!

    By Doug S on 8/13/2021

I love this rod. I have had it for a couple of months now and I am slaying bass & bluefish with it. I have it paired with a Tsunami SaltX 4000 and Power Pro SSV2 15 lb braid. In this configuration the rod can cast 1-2 oz lures a mile! The sweet spot for me is about 1.75 ozs. The 12 inch butt is very comfortable to work with and I can cast this rod all day without getting tired. No problem landing 35+ inch bass with this rod. This is now my go-to back bay and open beach rod. I am going to be buying another soon to have as backup. Josh: Please build a medium-heavy action version of this rod I can use with 30lb braid as a jetty rod!

Dark Matter OB Surf Spinning Rods are going to introduce finesse surfcasting to a lot of anglers! Based off of Japanese surf rods, the OB is perfect for throwing lighter lures from the open beach. If you're throwing SP Minnows, small bucktails or small jigs for fluke, albies, striped bass or snook, then you have to try one of these rods! The OB weighs just 7 ozs and features Fuji Alconite K Guides and a short custom butt that is different from what you have seen on surf rods in the past. Instead of pairing it with a heavy 6000 spinning reel, the OB is made for you to fish with a 3000 or 4000 size inshore spinning reel. By cutting so much weight you'll be able to fish much longer than with a traditional set up. The blank is designed to handle light lures and in combination with the guides will deliver extremely long casts! Much longer than what you would get with a traditional surf combo. With practice you'll be able to dump most of the braid on a 4000 size spinning reel. By casting longer and with less effort you'll be able to stay in the strike zone longer which will lead to more hookups! The butt on the OB is short like what you would find on an inshore rod. No more putting the rod between your legs and ending up with an aching back after a few hours on the water. You fish the rod in your hip and it gives you complete control. While the tip is extremely sensitive, the back end of the rod has a crazy amount of power so you will be able to control the fish. If you fish open beaches or from a pier, buy a Dark Matter OB Surf Spinning Rod!

Dark Matter OB Surf Spinning Rods come in 10" and have a 50/50 split. When you put the rod pieces together there will be some space showing. This is completely normal. Just twist the pieces together firmly but don't over do it. You do not need a lot of force. Due to the lightweight design, the OB is more fragile than a traditional surf rod. While it is extremely powerful, it cannot handle as much abuse as a traditional surf rod. Take good care of it and it will last a very long time!
