The Shimano Calcutta D CT301D Round Baitcasting Reel is a great entry into the Calcutta D lineup – it’s got all the goodies of its right handed brethren, but comes in a left-handed retrieve. It’s nice that Shimano cares about us lefties, and they show their love by producing a professional grade left handed reel that shines in light inshore saltwater applications, and mid to heavy freshwater applications. Complete with Shimano’s proprietary X-Ship gearing system, which puts anti-rust bearings on either side of the pinion gear providing sensational gear meshing and cranking power, the CT301D has a really luxurious feel to it. The CT301D is made in Japan using a one piece cold forged aluminum frame and body, and the spool is braid ready – capable of holding about 200 yards of 40# spectra. Also unique to this line of reels, the CT301D features Shimano’s “S” Compact Body design which gives the reel a much more agile shape, which fits snugly in your palm for great control while throwing plugs or working jigs. The Shimano Calcutta CT301D Round Baitcast Reel would be a great inshore fluke bucktailing reel for those here in the Northeast, but can also be utilized for pitching shrimp at redfish and seatrout, throwing soft plastics for weakfish and stripers, and light bottom fishing – think seabass and porgies.

This is a very nice reel. Round reels are difficult for me to use with my arthritic hand, but this one is not too bad. It is a pain to adjust the centrifugal brake control.
