The speedster of this storied series, the Shinano Tranx TRX500HG Low Profile Saltwater Reel is a one of a kind monster of a baitcaster. Technically it’s two of a kind, as the PG is also in the series but we’ll lump them into one for the sake of argument here. Widely used among big game freshwater anglers as an incredible musky reel, the TRX500HG is designed for the tough rigors of saltwater fishing. This model, the TRX500HG is designed for higher speed techniques like vertical jigging or throwing soft plastics and sub surface cruising lures at large gamefish – the High-Efficiency Gearing replaces the older main gear, for a highly modernized large main gear with more small teeth that results in a much more fluid range of motion. This gearing is tuned to a blistering 6.6:1 gear ratio that will rip your line in at 43 inches per crank. The TRX500HG comes equipped with a number of Shimano goodies, including the popular X-Ship gearing system that places ball bearings at either end of the pinion gear for an incredibly smooth and powerful crank that has to be felt to be believed. Additionally, the TRX500HG sports the VBS Brake System which uses centrifugal force to effectively control the spool while casting to prevent backlash and provide pinpoint accuracy. Because this is a low profile reel, many anglers have been matching this to powerful musky style rods that have trigger grips and long butt ends but incredible backbone – this enables anglers to target large saltwater species like stripers, cobia, schoolie tuna, dorado, king mackerel, sailfish, etc. The Shimano Tranx TRX500HG Low Profile Saltwater Reel will hold well over 400 yards of standard 50# braid.
